How to Sell Your Products Without Competition

Selling your products at shows can be difficult when you have a lot of competition. Although some show organizers are careful to have a good mix of vendors, it's not uncommon for other shows to have 20% or more of the booths filled with vendors in the same niche - which is a buyer's market and a seller's disappointing show.

Before signing up for any show, ask the promoter how many other vendors in your niche will have booths. And if possible, find out what kinds of these items will be represented at the show. Even if you have to dig a little for this information, it's worthwhile to find out in advance whether the show is likely to be profitable for you.

For example, my medium is jewelry, which is usually the most competitive field at any show. And because of the overcrowding in this niche, many jewelry artists price the jewelry in their booth so low that it's hard for them (or any of the other jewelers at that show) to make any sales at a worthwhile profit. No one benefits from that kind of venue.

But I've found out how I can easily get my fair share of the jewelry market by finding less competitive shows for selling my work. Here are some suggestions for shows where you can find eager buyers for your products and likely no other competing vendors:

Local Expos and Events

Many organized events in your area involve wholesale or retail vendors selling their products in booths. These events are usually well promoted and attended, and may be unlikely to have other vendors in your niche. Examples of this type of event include a women's career expo, a home improvement show, a health fair, a business expo, and virtually any trade show.

Other unusual events that can be great prospects for selling your products without competition include historic re-enactments, car club shows, gun and knife shows, garden shows, spring or fall fashion shows, motorcycle rallies (motorcyclists are among the best and biggest-spending jewelry customers you'll find!), and music competitions (like a battle of the bands or a bluegrass festival).

Club or other organization meetings are also a possibility if your product is interesting - you will likely be welcomed to give a talk about your goods and then sell them afterward. Examples of organizations include a Rotary club chapter, a garden club, an alumni association, or a local newcomers' club.

To find out about events like these well in advance, or to locate clubs or groups that would welcome an interesting product presentation and show, call your local tourism commission and chamber of commerce. Ask for their recommendations, and most importantly, request to be put on their mailing lists of upcoming events. When you receive the listings, carefully consider each event for its potential as a show for selling your goods without competition.

Your Own Shows

With a little more work, you can organize your own shows where you can be certain you'll be the only vendor in your niche. Examples of these are home parties, open studio sales at your studio or home, and fundraiser shows where you donate a portion of the proceeds to a designated charity. You can also cooperate with other vendors to set up bigger shows, and profit from each other's customer lists.

You might do very well at an event with a ready-made huge crowd, such as a high school football game. Secure permission ahead of time to set up a booth presenting your product, and donate a percentage of sales to the school.

The key to success when doing your own shows is to be sure the event is well publicized if it's open to the public, or that you personally phone and remind each invitee if it's a private sale or party. The higher the attendance, the higher your sales.

So you see there's no need to sell your products in overly competitive venues. Instead, consider your targeted customers and think creatively about opportunities to present your products to them.

You Can't Spell Networking Without Serendipity

Fear not to entertain strangers for by so doing some have entertained angels unaware.

This quotation is from the book of Hebrews, which means it probably has nothing to do with networking.

Or does it?

Networking is the process of sharing knowledge, helping others, and developing mutually beneficial relationships. Serendipity is the lucky tendency to find interesting or valuable things by chance. Mix the two forces, and youve got a sure-fire formula to boost your business.

Now, I understand the Catch-22: if its serendipity, how can you plan it? Well, youre right - you cant. But you can do a few things to be more aware of it and prepare yourself to leverage it.

What is Serendipity Networking?
First and foremost, serendipity networking is unexpected. You never know whom youre going to meet! So dont discount the power of each person to affect your business or even your life. For example, the birth of my career was a direct result of the Start Conversations with Random People on the Bus Who Happen to Know the Editor of a Major Newspaper Theory. Works every time!

Secondly, being at the right place at the right time is good; but being at the wrong place at the wrong time can be better. I once attended a small group discussion under the impression that the speaker was a certain author, only to realize I had read the flyer incorrectly the author wasnt coming at all. When I learned who the actual facilitator was, I was initially disappointed. I then realized how much she and I had in common, and now Im happy to say were great friends and colleagues who share information and ideas on a frequent basis!

Next, serendipity networking is powerful. I mean REALLY powerful. How many times have you met a valuable contact and said, Wow! The planets must have been aligned tonight! The Gods have smiled down upon me! or What are the odds of meeting someone as perfect as her?

World renowned speaker, author, and my friend Carol Weisman experienced the power of serendipity networking years ago. She was giving a speech at a conference that unfortunately conflicted with a concurrent session by Dr. Steven Covey. Obviously, attendance was low, but Carol didnt care. She did her absolute best and blew the audience away all six of them. At the end of her speech she announced, And now, Im going to do something that Steven Covey would NEVER do Im going to take my entire audience out to lunch!

Little did she know that a member of her audience worked for PBS. Five seasons of a hit program and a Telle Award later, Carol understood the power of serendipity networking.

Warning Signs That Networking is in the Air

  • Do you see the same person time and time again at similar meetings and events? Great! You are experiencing Networking Dejavu, and its not an accident. This is a person with whom you obviously share common interests. So go talk to him! Theres a good chance you can help each other.

  • Have you ever walked away from a coffee shop, bar, store, gym, church, mailbox, park, train, street corner, or bus and said to yourself, "Thank God I had one of my business cards with me today!" What a great feeling! Remember, chance encounters like these may be more valuable than you think.

  • Did you recently have a business conversation that contained the words, A friend of a friend, or, I dont know how I ended up at your website, but? Perfect. Localize this connection; then generate mutually valuable information and CPIs (Common Points of Interest).

  • A person called, emailed, wrote, or contacted you because something made her think of you. This should set off an alarm. Discover what associations were made so you can learn how to recreate that tipping point in the future.

    7 Serendipity Networking Tips

    1. Talk to everybody. We are conditioned not to talk to strangers, but some people enter our lives and change them forever.

    2. Be nice and help people. Reciprocity is an inherent human need. Go out of your way to extend kindness, friendliness, and assistance to everyone - they are likely to pay you back. Possibly by giving you millions of dollars.

    3. Keep a list of your People Collection. (In an non-crawl-space-under-the-deck kind of way) Whether you use a journal, database software, or bar napkins, make sure you write down the names of every person you meet not just business contacts. You never know when, 6 months down the road, an idea will pop into your head and youll need to call someone.

    4. Get out there. Make a weekly/monthly networking plan. Serendipity networking has a lot to do with being at the right place at the right time. And although you cant create serendipity, you can certainly put yourself in a position to grab it when it crosses your path.

    5. Always have business cards. Always. Most of your networking wont occur between Monday and Friday from 9-5. So remove the following phrase from your vocabulary: I dont have any of my business cards with me right now. No excuses. Unexpected conversations are the stuff serendipity networking is made of.

    6. Always have something free to give away. People like free stuff. They also like to show it to other people.

    7. Wear your nametag. A persons name is the single context of human memory most apt to be forgotten. So, at a meeting or event when youre given the chance to remind someone who you are do it. Theyll thank you by approaching you. And possibly by giving you millions of dollars.

    Luck is Not a Word

For effective serendipity networking, remember the three Ls: Listen, Localize, and Leverage.

  • Listen: the most important communication tools you own are your ears. Keep them open for iceberg statements - key phrases under which 90% of the remaining important information awaits.

  • Localize: If youve ever been stricken with food poisoning, the first thing you always do - after chugging the bottle of Pepto - is localize your sickness. Serendipity networking is the same way. Retrace your steps and discover where the rock created the ripple.

  • Leverage: After youve identified which person, event, situation, letter, gossip, or bathroom stall writing was responsible for the spark and development of a mutually valuable relationship make a mental note. Hell, make a post-it note! Do anything that will remind you of the chain of valuable events so in the future you can put yourself in a position where it is likely to happen again.

Serendipity networking takes time. As the definition says, it means a lucky tendency to find interesting or valuable things by chance. Now, you cant make it happen. But you CAN make yourself more aware of the warning signs and more accessible to that which fortuitously affects you. And even if you really DO think its all about luck, remember: L.U.C.K is an acronym for Laboring Under Correct Knowledge.

  • How to Cook Grouper

"Grouper" refers to a number of different, but related, large fish notable for their stout bodies and big mouths.

Sport fishermen love groupers. Bottom dwellers, these fish pose a particular challenge because they like to back themselves in amongst rocks and debris on the ocean floor. They will do this even after they have been hooked, so the fisherman has to carefully "work" it out without snagging or snapping the line on something.

Normally, you would have to go about 20 miles offshore to find the best grounds for fishing grouper. In recent years, though, the development of artificial reefs off the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the U.S. have brought groupers, in large numbers, closer to land.

Groupers are also being farmed in some areas now. So while some types of fish are becoming scarcer or even disappearing from market shelves, grouper is actually being seen more often. This is a welcome development, because groupers are good eating.

Try grilling or baking grouper. The following recipes--one for grilling, the other for baking--are easy and delicious.

    Grilled Grouper

    Ingredients

    2 lbs. fresh grouper fillets

    1 jar fancy mustard

    1 tablespoon grated onion

    1/2 tsp. salt

    1/2 tsp. coase-ground black pepper

    Directions

Mix mustard, onion, salt and pepper. Coat the fillets with this mixture and marinate for 1 to 2 hours in the refrigerator. Remove fillets from fridge and place on a hot grill. Cook the grouper until done, turning once during the grilling. (Note: 1-inch-thick fillets will take approximately 13 minutes to cook. Thinner fillets will take less time.)

    Baked Grouper

    Ingredients

    1 stick butter or margarine

    Juice of 1freshly squeezed lemon

2 lbs. grouper fillets (fresh or frozen)

    1 cup bread crumbs

    1/4 cup parmesan cheese

    1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

    Directions

    1. Melt the butter or margarine in a baking pan. Pour the lemon juice into the butter or margarine and mix well.

    2. Lay the grouper fillets in the pan, coating one side with the butter-lemon juice mix; then turn and coat the other side.

    3. Spread bread crumbs over the fish.

    4. Bake at 360 degrees for 15 to 25 minutes; fish is done when it can be easily flaked with a fork.

Whether grilled or baked, grouper goes well served on a bed of rice. Add lemon slices or sliced almonds for a special touch.
