Camping Safety Guide - Plants, Insects, Food, Equipment, First Aid

Camping is a fun-filled activity for many individuals and families. However, proper planning and preparation for camping safety is too often not given enough emphasis. The result is that the anticipated joy, excitement and exhilaration of the camping trip is many times disrupted by unanticipated events--poisonous plants, insect bites and strings, spoiled food, tent area issue--just to mention a few. Many of these could have possibly been avoided or diminished if a few camping safety tips and guidelines had been followed.

Poisonous plants include poison ivy, poison oak, and sumac. Abiding by the leaves of three leave it be" rule is a good way to identify these plants that cause itching and other skin irritations. These plants can range from yellow/orange to yellow/green to red depending on the time in the growth cycle of the plant. During the winter small berries can also be seen.

Pictures of these plants as well as treatments for the skin irritations can be found at the website http://www.outdoorcamping101.com/.

Insect bites and stings from bees, wasps, yellow jackets, spiders, and ticks can result in painful itching, swelling and redness. In some individuals these bites and stings can cause an allergic reaction which should be treated immediately, especially if it is greater than a mild reaction. If swallowing and breathing become difficult, or fainting/dizziness occurs, or the tongue swells, immediate emergency medical attention should be obtained. Further discussion on this topic can be found at the website.

Wilderness animals (bears, etc.) should not be treated a friendly beasts. Children especially should be taught that they should not attempt to feed or go near these animals. These animals are particularly attracted to food. Therefore care should be taken to keep food at a distance from the living areas. Also the food should be stored in elevated areas not readily accessible to these animals.

Food safety is a very important aspect of camping. Food poisoning or spoilage can occur very quickly especially in warm temperatures. However, there are many foods that are non-perishable that can be taken on camping trips without worry. These include most can foods, nuts, some fruits, dehydrated meals that can be prepared with water. Special care must be taken when bringing meats and poultry. Refrigeration is the greatest concern. If there is no refrigeration, especially in the warmer temperatures, meats and poutry, unless dried, are better left at home.

Tent safety can be practiced by adhering to a few tips:
oDont pitch your tent in low lying areas with poor drainage where rain and water can collect:
oDont store food in close proximity to the living areas (less than 100 feet) this can be an invitation to unwanted visitors (animals):
oDont store flammable liquid fire starters near the living areas:
oDont pitch your tent under trees where damage can occur from falling limbs, etc.:
oMake sure that the tent is not flammable

The following general camping safety guidelines will also make you trip more pleasurable:
oBring proper clothing. Sometimes the temperatures change unexpectedly especially at night:
oProtect you eyes and skin with sunglasses and sunscreen:
oInsect repellents will help keep away pesky insects:
oBring your own drinking water the streams and creeks may be contaminated:
